Winton Oil Paint Review

Decent synthetic paint that is best for artists who love texture and impasto.
Winton Oil's Ivory Black

When I started painting with oils 15 years ago, I almost exclusively used Winton Oil Colour from Windsor and Newton. I remember buying the giant 200ml tubes to save on costs. My budget was tight. I recall living off of $300 a month during that time.

I don't remember having any issues with the brand. It was reliable and helped me learn how to paint. Winton is also available everywhere they sell oil paints and is safe to use.

Nowadays, I rarely find myself using more than a pea-size of oil paint at a time. So trying to save money by buying a massive amount of cheap paint doesn't sound as good anymore.

Summary

While recently using Winton to paint the background of a portrait, the thick buttery titanium white added a few millimeters of depth to the painting surface - which is not ideal in my opinion. Some artistsĀ liveĀ for impasto. Winton might be your brand if you want to preserve texture.

Winton Oil Paint

Winton has an average particle size of fewer than 25 microns, which is good for student-grade paint; it even falls within the professional-grade paint pigment size. Comparably, some colors in the Rublev brand ranged from 10-120 micrometers.

Winton paint is consistent and smooth it comes out of the tube with a buttery texture. The opacity is consistent across colors, except for Alizarin Crimson, which is very transparent.

  • Winton is composed mainly of synthetic hues.
  • Winton is not shy about using fillers, stabilizers, driers, and synthetic hues.

It is a decent paint.

Winton employs exclusively synthetic pigments. Their professional-grade particle size, averaging under 25 microns, enhances the paint across aspects like opacity, texture, and tinting strength. Fillers and driers in Winton's color mixing, reduce the benefits of a smaller pigment size.

However, Winton uniquely stands out in the oil painting realm because of its fillers and driers, which facilitate intriguing impasto textures.
